Which Wedding Dress Type Is Best For Your Body Shape?

Your wedding day is going to be one of the best days of your life. It's a day you've probably been looking forward to for quite some time. On your big day, everyone is going to be looking at you, the bride, and you definitely don't want to be wearing an unflattering gown. Not everyone can wear the same type of wedding dress style. While one may look great on one bride, it may not look as good on another. See below for tips to use when picking out your wedding gown to help flatter your shape.

Know Your Body Shape

You first need to have an understanding of what shape your body is. To find your body shape, you only need three measurements - the bust, hips and waist. See below for a few body shapes:

  • Hourglass. Women with hourglass shapes have a larger bust and larger hips, but a slim waist.
  • Pear. Pear shapes are larger in the hips and slimmer in the waist and bust.
  • Apple. Women that have an apple shape are larger in the waist and smaller in the bust and hips.
  • Rectangle. Rectangle shapes look visually the same size throughout the shoulders, bust, waist and hips.

Find Your Gown

Now that you know your shape, you can find which dresses will look best on your body type. See below for a listing for each body type mentioned above.

1. Hourglass

Hourglass figures should be flaunted to show off your assets. Take advantage of your proportionate shape and take a risk in a shapely gown.

  • Trumpet or mermaid
  • A-line
  • Dropped waist

2. Pear

Pear shapes again have a larger bottom, so you want to take the eyes off of your lower half. You can wear a dress that camouflages that portion of your body and draws the eyes up instead.

  • Ballgown or princess
  • A-line
  • Strapless
  • Empire waist

3. Apple

Much the same as pear shapes, you want to draw the eye up and away from the larger portion of your body. Stay away from trumpet, mermaid and sheath dresses.

  • Ballgown or princess
  • A-line
  • Empire waist

4. Rectangle

With a rectangle shape, you don't have a lot of "shape." To create shape, you want to give the illusion of a waist-line.

  • Empire waist
  • Strapless
  • Sash, belted or with embellishments

Finding the perfect dress on your wedding day may sound simple, but it may take you trying on a handful of dresses before you find the right one. Be sure to look for dresses that are flattering for your shape. Find your perfect gown at a shop like Bridal Elegance.
